Department of Intelligence Studies, Geospatial Science, Political Science, and History

The mission of the Department of Intelligence Studies, Geospatial Sciences, Political Science and History is to provide high-quality educational programs and services in these degree-granting programs and in Philosophy and Sustainability.  A major goal of the department’s multi-disciplinary faculty is to help students develop key skills and foundational knowledge in the foregoing areas. By offering courses ranging from critical thinking, the humanities, and social science to ethics, civic engagement, environmental studies & sustainability, and global literacy, the departmental faculty strive to empower students with the skills and knowledge they will need to excel in their chosen professions and become effective twenty-first century global citizens. The department will endeavor through its internship programs and work closely with institutional partners, to provide career pathways for all majors that will assure transition into meaningful professions in their chosen field. Through teaching, research, and service, the Intelligence Studies, Geospatial Sciences, Political Science, and History faculty aim to promote the cultural, social, and economic well-being of the residents of the region and the nation.

Online Degree Completion

Degrees in intelligence studies, history, and political science can be completed online. Pending system approval, the BA in Geospatial Science can be completed online. 

Learning Outcomes

B.A. Geospatial Science

  • Students should be able to define and describe fundamental concepts in geospatial science.
  • Students should be able to think geographically. They should demonstrate an ability to identify, interpret, and reason analytically about spatial patterns and their possible causes and consequences. Students should also be able to define and explain the spatial interactions between human activities and environmental conservation.
  • Students should be able to define, describe, and use geospatial technologies including geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing, global positioning system, or allied technologies to describe and/or resolve problems faced by government and industry.
  • Students should demonstrate their capability of communicating and presenting both orally and in written form.

B.A. History

  • Historical Knowledge: Identify and describe the variety of human experience in U.S., European, and global societies, recent and earlier.
  • Historical Methods: Construct critically analyzed scholarship using primary and secondary sources and effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Historical Perspective: Analyze the multiple causes and consequences of historical events and assess the validity of historical interpretations using chronological thinking.
  • Historical Ethics: Conduct historical research with integrity.

B.A. Intelligence Studies

  • Identify and distinguish the basic concepts and theoretical approaches to the emerging discipline of Intelligence Studies.
  • Research, examine, and critique, orally and in writing, major issues, concerns, and debates, including ethics—within the emerging discipline and related disciplines such as Security Studies.
  • Apply foreign cultural and linguistic knowledge to structure intelligence problems and provide solutions in response to security in the local, state, national, and international communities.
  • Analyze the planning, implementing, and evaluating of intelligence activities in any setting (military/government, business/corporate, law enforcement/security) from the local to the global stage.

B.A. Political Science

  • Students will be able to explain the basic concepts and theoretical approaches in the realm of Political Science including American Politics, International and Comparative Politics, Public Administration, and Political Methodology.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate competency with necessary tools underlying social science research including competency in statistics and qualitative analysis.
  • Students will be able to apply theories and research methods to analyze new and complex phenomena.
  • Student will be able to develop critical thinking, problem solving, oral and written communication skills.
