Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers three programs leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science. These degree programs are designed so that all students take the basic University College Core courses, major courses in Mathematics and Computer Science, and flexible elective choices. The department also offers minors in Mathematics and Computer Science, a minor/ certificate in Cybersecurity, a certificate in Data Science, and courses in statistics. These programs of study prepare graduates for careers in teaching, business, industry, and government, or for further study.

Student Learning Outcomes

BS in Mathematics

  1. Student will be able to demonstrate skills in solving mathematical problems;
  2. Student will be able to comprehend mathematical principles and logic;
  3. Student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of mathematical modeling and proficiency in using mathematical software;
  4. Student will be able to manipulate and analyze data numerically and/or graphically using appropriate software; and
  5. Student will be able to communicate effectively mathematical ideas/results verbally or in writing.

BS in Computer Science

  1. An ability to analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions;
  2. An ability to design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline;
  3. An ability to communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts;
  4. An ability to recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles;
  5. An ability to function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline; and
  6. An ability to apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions.
