HUMN 217 - Performing American Democracy Credit Hours: 3 This course explores the ideals, challenges, and milestones of the United States’ democratic journey through their expression in the performing arts. Students analyze and interpret foundational democratic texts—such as the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Federalist Papers—and examine how these ideals are reflected, celebrated, and contested in American cultural works. Examples include Broadway musicals (1776, Hamilton), plays (The Crucible), and various forms of American music, both symphonic and popular. Students also engage in creative projects, including performance and critique, to develop an embodied understanding of democratic principles.
