MATH 415 - Intro to Wavelets and Data Compression Credit Hours: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0
This course presents the basic principles of wavelets and data compression. Wavelets have had quite a huge impact in the signal processing community, especially with regard to applications like compression (speech, audio, image and video, modeling and restoration). The course will cover topics including: inner products and norms of n-dimensional vectors, orthogonal matrices and block matrix arithmetic, Entropy and Cumulative Energy, peak signal to noise ratio, complex numbers and Euler’s formula, Fourier series, convolutions, lowpass/highpass filters, Haar Transformations, Daubechies filters, Gaussian white noise, and the VISUShrink denoising technique. A significant amount of the course is dedicated to programming. Prerequisite: MATH 241 and MATH 251
