Effective July 1, 2018, a 2.7 overall GPA will be required for graduating from all Educator Preparation Program degree and licensure programs.

University College Core Curriculum

The successful completion of the University College Core Curriculum requirements is the initial step in the educator preparation admission process. A demonstrated proficiency in reading and mathematics and an overall GPA of 2.7 (3.0 preferred) are also required.

Transfer students must meet the same standards as first-time freshmen in completing the University College Core Curriculum requirements.

A student wishing to declare a major in any College of Education program must demonstrate the following:

  • Completion of EDUC 211   with a grade of C or better (if applicable to program)
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.7 (3.0 preferred)
  • Completion of a Declaration of Major form (scroll down to the appropriate degree)
  • Completion of the Praxis CASE tests (or SAT/ACT scores) required by the State of North Carolina for the admission to educator preparation programs.

Transfer students admitted to Fayetteville State University who wish to pursue a degree in Education are advised to declare their desired education major as soon as they are admitted. The early declaration is vital for ensuring that students receive immediate and appropriate academic advice, facilitating a smooth integration into their chosen program’s specific requirements and coursework. Admissions as an education major does not guarantee admissions to Teacher Education.

A student declaring an education major must meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of a Declaration of Major form

Once a student has been accepted as an education major, an education major advisor will be assigned. The education major advisor will work with the student to verify satisfactory progress towards the declaration of major. The education major student and the education major advisor must participate in at least one advisement meeting each semester.

Current Fayetteville State University students interested in transferring to a major within the College of Education must meet specific academic criteria. To be eligible for a major change to any education program, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 or better. Admission as an education major does not guarantee admission to the teacher education program.

Academic Progress within the Major

An education major who fails to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 (3.0 preferred) will be required to complete an Academic Success Plan with his/her advisors and will be permitted to enroll in a maximum of 15 credits for the subsequent semester. Students on probation will be required to complete an Academic Success Plan with their advisors.

Students at Fayetteville State University placed on academic probation must adhere to an academic success plan designed to facilitate a return to good academic standing. If a student does not demonstrate progress toward meeting the stipulated goals of the academic success plan, it may become necessary to reevaluate their chosen major. In such cases, the student will be counseled to consider selecting a new major that aligns more closely with their strengths and capabilities.
