Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle Grades, Reading, and Special Education

The primary mission of the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle Grades, Reading, and Special Education at Fayetteville State University is to offer programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree and initial licensure in Elementary and Middle Grades Education as well as the Bachelor of Science degree and initial licensure in Birth through Kindergarten. The elementary education degree and licensure programs prepare facilitators of learning to teach grades K-6, the Birth through Kindergarten degree and licensure program prepares facilitators of learning to teach Pre K-Kindergarten, the middle grades degree and licensure programs prepare professionals to teach grades 6-9, and the reading licensure programs prepare education professionals for teaching reading in grades K-12. The department also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Birth through Kindergarten Non-Teaching that does not yield an initial license. 

Candidates for the initial teaching license (Bachelor of Science [B.S.] degree, non-degree Licensure Only programs,) will complete a series of Evidence requirements to demonstrate their competence in the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards. These evidences must be completed during course work and field experiences (if required), and candidates must achieve a minimum rating of Proficient on each indicator on the scoring rubrics for course credit and recommendation for licensure. These evidences include the Leadership Family - Community Collaboration Project and the submission of the edTPA portfolio. In addition, candidates who are required to student teach must also achieve a rating of Met on all parts of the final Certification of Teaching Capacity and Exit Criteria forms. BK candidates will have to complete NAEYC BK Artifacts. 

Learning Outcomes

Elementary Education

  1. Teacher candidates will acquire and apply content knowledge to instruct K-6 students based upon the NC Standard Course of Study, INTASC and CAEP Standards.
  2. Teacher candidates will implement practices that reflect the cognitive, mental, social-emotional, and physical development of K-6 students.
  3. Teacher candidates will design and incorporate technology to enhance instruction, learning, research, assessment, and data management.
  4. Teacher candidates will demonstrate leadership skills through the establishment of a safe, orderly, and positive environment.
  5. Teacher candidates will apply appropriate accommodations and modifications to support teaching strategies for diverse learners.
  6. Teacher candidates will integrate 21st century knowledge and skills in instruction.
  7. Teacher candidates will communicate effectively, analyze data, and be reflective practitioners.

Birth-Kindergarten

  1. Teacher candidates will acquire and apply content knowledge to instruct B-K students based upon the NC Standard Course of Study, INTASC and CAEP Standards.
