Program Requirements
- Two letters of recommendation. Ideally, these will be from college faculty who can speak to the candidate’s ability to do graduate work.
- Official transcripts from all universities or colleges at which courses have been taken. Minimum GPA of 2.75 on 4.0 scale in all undergraduate coursework or the last 60 hours of coursework that may include no more than 6 hours of graduate work.
- A master’s degree from an accredited institution is accepted in lieu of the above-mentioned criteria.
- A student who does not meet the GPA requirement can apply as a professional development student (for 12 credits) to improve his/ her GPA. In this case, each application will be considered on a case by case basis.

Core Curriculum: 9 Credits
Sociology Electives: 9 Credits
At least one course must be a 600-level course. SOCI 500 is required for students with undergraduate degrees other than Sociology. SOCI 500 will serve as a Sociology elective for students with an undergraduate degree in Sociology.
Free Electives: 6 Credits
Two 500 level or higher courses in other disciplines or in sociology
Other Requirements: 6 Credits
- Two sociology graduate courses
Comprehensive Examination
Successful completion of the written departmental comprehensive examination in sociological theory and methods and analysis in sociology.
