Course Program of Study (CPOS) Policy
Federal financial aid regulations require that students receiving Title IV financial aid be enrolled in an eligible degree program and only in coursework that applies toward the completion of their officially declared program of study. Federal regulations prohibit the awarding of federal financial aid for coursework that does not apply toward an eligible degree, major, concentration, or other catalog-defined program requirements.
Course Program of Study (CPOS) is the institutional compliance process used by Fayetteville State University to ensure adherence to these federal financial aid eligibility regulations. Through CPOS, the University verifies that federal financial aid is awarded only for coursework that is applicable to a student’s officially declared program of study, as defined in the University’s academic catalog.
A student’s enrollment will be reviewed each term to determine whether registered coursework applies to their officially declared program of study. Courses that are not applicable toward degree completion may not be included in the calculation of federal financial aid eligibility.
Examples of courses that may not be eligible for federal financial aid include, but are not limited to:
- Courses that do not satisfy degree requirements for the student’s declared major;
- Courses that exceed the number of allowable elective hours in the program;
- Repeated coursework beyond federal repeat limits;
- Courses not required for the student’s officially declared concentration or minor;
- Coursework taken after all degree requirements have been satisfied.
Students enrolled in coursework that is not applicable to their program of study may experience a reduction, delay, or cancellation of financial aid.
Students are responsible for:
- Declaring the appropriate major, concentration, or minor in a timely manner;
- Registering for courses that apply to their officially declared program of study;
- Working with their academic advisor to ensure proper course selection;
-
Submitting substitution and waiver requests as early as possible to allow sufficient time for review and processing before registration and/or financial aid disbursement.
Academic advisors and academic departments are responsible for:
- Assisting students with selecting courses applicable to degree completion;
-
Submitting approved substitutions, waivers, and curriculum exceptions the semester prior to enrollment or graduation to allow sufficient processing time;
- Ensuring Degree Works and other degree audit tools accurately reflect approved academic exceptions when applicable.
Students enrolled in pre-major programs, except where the pre-major directly aligns with an academic pathway, may have limited coursework eligible for financial aid until officially admitted into a degree-granting major.
Enrollment in coursework that is not eligible under CPOS may also impact a student’s ability to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and Maximum Timeframe requirements for financial aid eligibility.
For more information regarding CPOS requirements, students should contact their assigned academic advisor to ensure courses are applicable.
