Theatre Program Admission and Continuation Policy

Fayetteville State University Department of Performing and Fine Arts

To ensure a high standard of artistic and academic excellence, the Fayetteville State University Theatre program requires the following for admission, continuation, and progression within the major:  1. Program Admission Requirements Prospective students must audition and/or participate in a portfolio review, as determined by Theatre faculty, to gain admission to the Theatre program. The format of this evaluation will depend on the applicant’s intended area of study and will assess the skills and potential necessary for success in the program. 2. Continuation Requirements To maintain their status as Theatre majors, students must meet the following criteria:  Portfolio Review: Students must successfully complete a faculty-led portfolio review as part of their participation in Production Practicum classes. These reviews will assess technical, artistic, and professional growth. Faculty Approval: Continuation in the major requires the agreement of a majority of Theatre faculty members, based on the student’s academic, artistic, and professional progress. 3. Concentration Selection and Renewal Initial Approval: Students must receive approval from the faculty member overseeing their chosen concentration before formally selecting it as their area of study. Annual Renewal: Faculty approval for the chosen concentration must be renewed annually before course enrollment for the upcoming academic year. This process will include a review of the student’s progress in coursework, production work, and professional development relevant to the concentration. The Theatre program faculty will communicate specific guidelines, deadlines, and evaluation criteria for each stage of this process to ensure transparency and support student success. Failure to meet these requirements may result in probation or removal from the program.
